Record number of taxpayers file Self Assessment returns on Christmas Day

HMRC data shows that 3,275 people filed their self-assessment tax returns on Christmas Day. This marks a record, with the number of people submitting their tax figures on December 25 up 15% on the 2,828 returns recorded on the same date in 2021 and the 2,700 logged in 2020. The peak point came at lunchtime, with 319 returns received between midday and 12.59pm. HMRC also revealed that 141 people chose to file their returns between 11pm and 11.59pm on Christmas Eve. Overall, a total of 22,060 people went online to submit their form for the 2021/22 tax year between 24 and 26 December. The number of returns registered between Christmas Eve and Boxing Day was down 30% compared to last year.
